After 29 years of marriage, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and his wife are ending their union. The mayor told the Orlando Sentinel that the pair have been separated for some time. He also told a reporter that there was no malice, and the pair have remained in each other’s lives.
Mayor Dyer officially filed for divorce in Holmes County, a small county on the Georgia-Florida border, on September 1. The divorce application said that the marriage was irretrievably broken. It also stated that the pair had already come to an agreement with regards to the division of property. The mayor said that he chose to file the paperwork outside of Orlando to avoid the scrutiny of the public.
The couple met in law school at the University of Florida. The pair have two adult sons, and Karen Dyer works as a corporate attorney in the area. The mayor is known for having become the longest serving mayor in Orlando’s history as of December 2016. The mayor has said that he will for the office again in 2019, which would make it his fifth term.
Mayor Dyer has said that he would like his divorce to serve as an example to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation.
