November is National Adoption Awareness Month, and it got off to a great start on November 3, with eight adoptions in Charleston County Family Court in South Carolina. Over the course of 2016, there were more than 400 families who added children to their lives through legal adoption. That total doesn’t count children who were adopted privately.
One such adoption was within a family from Lakewood Ranch, Florida. A couple made the adoption of their grandchild formal Friday after the child’s biological mother left and the biological father was declared neglectful. The child spent nine months in foster care until moving in with her grandparents. Friday’s adoption officially turned grandma and grandma into momma and papa.
Stories such as this occur across the United States every day. Whether taking legal custody of family members or adopting the children of strangers, people add to their families through adoption and it is a fantastic option. There are tens of thousands, and even more, children in the “system” that are longing for a family of their own.
