Will Johnson, an Orlando City soccer team midfielder, was arrested in early September on charges of domestic battery. The 30-year-old athlete was booked into Orange County jail and had posted bond by that afternoon.
Reports say that a law enforcement officer responded to a call of domestic violence placed by the player’s wife. In a sworn statement, the wife said that she and Johnson were in the process of divorce and had gotten into a verbal argument. Johnson tackled his wife, “wrapping both of his arms completely around her waist.”
As a result of the tackle, the wife fell down, hit her head on the patio and scraped her knee, hand and arm. The woman’s mother was visiting the home when the incident occurred and corroborated the story. The couple’s small children were not present. The responding deputy took pictures of the wife’s injuries.
The report said that Johnson started recording an argument on his phone. That argument began in the kitchen and moved onto the patio. The wife refused medical treatment and declined to press charges. She did say she would testify in court if necessary.
